Herbert Hirche is one of the most important German architects and designers of the 1950s and 1960s. After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau and Berlin with Kandinsky and Mies van der Rohe, among others, and then worked in their Berlin office. After further collaboration with Egon Eiermann, he became professor at the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Berlin-Weißensee in 1948 and later at the Staatliche Akademie für bildende Kunst in Stuttgart. In addition to his teaching activities, Hirche always worked as a freelance architect and designer and had a great influence on the development of product design in post-war Germany. He was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund, the Verband Deutscher Industriedesigner and the Rat der Formgebung. His designs are characterized by functionality and harmonious proportions in the style of the Bauhaus doctrine, which naturally fit into their respective surroundings.
